Sam recently spoke on Cape Talk/Talk Radio on the benefits of mulching. Here we list some of facts shared on the radio interview: |

What is Mulch? Mulch is a cover or 'blanket' that goes on top of your soil. It is best made of natural materials such as bark, straw, wood chip, grass and leaves. |
The Benefits
- Insulates the soil from heat - decreasing evaporation by 40%!
- Keeps the soil cool in summer, warmer in winter.
- Limits erosion - both sheet and impact erosion.
- Inhibits weeds germinating.
- Attracts worms and beneficial insects.
- Crunchy mulch (oak leaves, crushed shells) repels snails and slugs.
- Improves water absorbtion ten fold.

Some Cautions Fresh grass clippings can suffocate the soil. It is important to thin them by hand or mix them with a lighter material such as dry leaves. In the hot and wet Gauteng summers, choose a harder mulch such as bark and wood chip. The lighter mulches can rot in the wet and hot weather. |
